March 1, 2016, Metabo was acquired by Hitachi Koki, part of Hitachi Group. The Hitachi Group sold Hitachi Koki in March 2017 to HK Holdings Co., Ltd., an entity of the investment firm KKR.

Hitachi Power Tools changed their name to Metabo HPT in 2018. After this happened, Metabo issued a statement saying this doesn't affect them at all. So, Hitachi Tools has been Metabo HPT for nearly 4 years now. Hitachi's name change was necessary.

In 1923, Albrecht Schnizler constructed the first hand-held drill. The name Metabo is derived from this metal drill. Today, the company with tradition employs 2,000 persons, 1,200 of which in Nürtingen, Germany.
